German at B2 level for the nursing licence (you can start earlier as a nursing assistant)
A valid passport of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Legal route to Germany

Route 1, recognition as a registered nurse: the responsible German state authority compares your training with German nurse training. You then complete an adaptation course or a knowledge test. Through a recognition partnership (§ 16d (3) of the German Residence Act) you can come to Germany before recognition is complete. For the full licence, B2 German is normally required.

Route 2, Western Balkans Regulation (§ 26 (2) of the German Employment Ordinance): citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina can work in Germany without a recognised qualification, for example as a nursing assistant. You need a job offer and the prior approval of the Federal Employment Agency. The quota is up to 50,000 approvals per year. Recognition as a registered nurse can run at the same time.

What is the Western Balkans Regulation?

A special rule for citizens of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia. It allows you to work in Germany without a recognised qualification if you have a job offer and the Federal Employment Agency approves it. The quota is up to 50,000 approvals per year.

Can I work as a registered nurse straight away?

For that you need recognition by the German state authority, usually after an adaptation course or a knowledge test, and German at B2 level. Until then you can work as a nursing assistant.

How long does it take?

Through the Western Balkans Regulation often a few months, depending on the monthly quota and embassy appointments. Full recognition as a registered nurse takes longer, depending on your German level.
